Black Bear Bayou

There is a unique subdivision in Carrabelle, Florida! Black Bear Bayou is located on the pristine Crooked River, which derives its name from its meandering course. The property is positioned on a wide bend of the river forming a peninsula of land. This affords a breathtaking panoramic view of the river and the Tate’s Hell Wilderness Area beyond.

Black Bear Bayou is the result of a dream of Jon Johnson, former Executive Director of St. Francis Wildlife Association for over 20 years. Johnson has been a frequent visitor to Carrabelle since graduating from FSU 35 years ago. “I was always drawn to the uniqueness of the forest and coastline around Carrabelle. I have traveled every dirt road in these woods. In fact, I was able to take photographs of seven different species of native orchids in just one morning in May, all within only a few miles from Black Bear Bayou.”

The waterfront subdivision was laid out after carefully considering how to have the least impact on the habitat and its wildlife occupants. Lots vary in size from three to eleven acres. Each lot is unique. One even has a beautiful pond where otters reside.

Another important feature is the secluded nature of the subdivision. Only two miles north of Carrabelle, a short distance from Highway 67, it’s close to stores, the coastline and its barrier islands, boat ramps, etc., but still far enough away to allow a sense of seclusion. The configuration of the lots also provides another significant feature. Each lot has a natural barrier of forest between it and neighboring lots. The only neighbors you see are the wildlife moving about the subdivision.

A 14 acre natural area has been preserved for a planned nature trail for the enjoyment of the residents of Black Bear Bayou. Johnson summed it up this way, “Why have to go to a zoo or a park to experience wildlife and the pleasures of nature when you have them in your own backyard?” His enthusiasm for pristine natural areas and his love for wildlife is what led him to envision a community that would have a very natural undisturbed setting.

“I actually lived at the 35 acre St. Francis Wildlife Center for over 15 years. I wanted to retire to a place where I could have the same natural experience I had at the refuge.” His face lights up when he talks about the anticipation of seeing hawks, owls, songbirds, woodpeckers, deer, otters, and other animals moving about the acres of Black Bear Bayou.

After helping many others plan their own natural properties while at St. Francis Wildlife, Johnson has now realized his own dream . . . a unique and secluded natural subdivision on the Crooked River called Black Bear bayou.
